A wilder alternative to hiking in Valtellina

For hikers travelling from Milan, Val Codera takes about as long to reach as many Valtellina trailheads, but offers a different experience: there are no vehicle roads and the valley is entered on foot.

Val Codera lies in Valchiavenna above Novate Mezzola, just north of Colico. It is a natural choice for hiking near Lake Como, from Lake Mezzola, or on quieter routes than better-known Valtellina destinations.

Choosing a route

Routes range from an easy valley walk to EE itineraries for experienced hikers. Distance and duration alone do not describe difficulty: consider ascent, terrain, altitude, exposure and seasonal conditions.

Access and accommodation

The classic route starts in Novate Mezzola and reaches Bresciadega through Codera. It is a long, sustained ascent; staying at the hut allows an unhurried visit and a continuation into upper Val Codera the next day.

Rifugio Bresciadega has shared dormitories, hot showers, a fireplace dining room and homemade food. Confirm opening, beds and meals before departure.

The Sentiero Roma from Val Codera

Starting from Novate Mezzola, Bresciadega is the first base on the traverse towards Rifugio Gianetti and later Sentiero Roma stages. This high route is for experienced hikers, with rocky passes, equipped sections and long days at altitude.
